Do I Need to Buy a Whole New Wardrobe to Find My Personal Style?
Short answer: no.
Okay, I know you probably want more than the short answer.
In my opinion, definitely not.
In fact, I believe that what’s already sitting in your wardrobe can tell you far more about your personal style than buying new clothes ever will.
Your current wardrobe can show you:
What you genuinely love wearing
What you keep reaching for
What you repeatedly buy
What never seems to get worn
Which colours, shapes and fabrics make you feel good
Which clothes make you feel most like yourself
And yet, when we feel like we have “nothing to wear”, our first instinct is often to go shopping.
And then we buy more.
And more.
And somehow, despite having even more clothes, we still don't feel like we know what to wear.
So, before you go shopping for a whole new wardrobe, I want you to try something else.
Start with the outfits you already love
Think back to three recent occasions when you felt really good in what you were wearing.
They don't need to have been your most stylish outfits.
They don't even need to have been particularly exciting.
Maybe it was an outfit you've worn countless times. Maybe it was something you threw on without thinking too much about it. Maybe you just caught yourself in the mirror and thought, “Actually, I really like this.”
The important thing is that you remember thinking:
“I like how I feel in this.”
Now ask yourself:
What do these outfits have in common?
Maybe they're comfortable.
Maybe you love the shape or silhouette.
Maybe they're simple and easy to wear.
Maybe there's a colour you keep reaching for.
Maybe you love the fabrics or textures.
Or maybe you can't quite explain why you like them, you just feel more like you when you're wearing them.
That's okay too.
These are clues.
And those clues can tell you so much about your personal style, and about the clothes that help you feel confident, comfortable and like yourself.
In many cases, they can tell you more than a shopping trip ever could.
What I see in my clients' wardrobes
I've seen a lot of wardrobes while working with clients, and do you know what many of them have in common?
They're full of gorgeous clothes.
And yet, my client is convinced they have nothing to wear.
It's a surprisingly common experience.
Sometimes the problem isn't that you don't have enough clothes.
It's that you don't know how to make the clothes you already own work for you.
When we take the time to step back and get curious about what's already there, two things often happen.
1. We discover far more outfits than expected
Pieces that had been forgotten about suddenly become interesting again.
Combinations that had never occurred to you start to work.
Something you haven't worn in months gets paired with something else and suddenly feels completely different.
And often, my clients are surprised by just how many outfits they can create that they genuinely love.
2. The shopping list becomes much shorter
Instead of deciding that you need a completely new wardrobe, we can identify the actual gaps.
Maybe there are five pieces that would make a meaningful difference.
Maybe it's one really good pair of trousers.
Maybe you need a jacket that works with more of your wardrobe.
Maybe you need to replace something you wear constantly because the old one is no longer working.
The point is that you're shopping with intention rather than shopping because you're overwhelmed.
And that can make a huge difference.
Sometimes you just need a fresh perspective
This is one of the reasons I love wardrobe reviews so much.
Sometimes your wardrobe doesn't need more clothes.
It needs a fresh set of eyes. (That’s where I come in, a fresh set of expert eyes 😉)
When you're looking at the same clothes every morning, it's easy to stop seeing the possibilities.
You see the same trousers.
The same dress.
The same tops.
The same things you haven't worn in ages.
But when you slow down and look at your wardrobe differently, you can start to see what is actually there and, more importantly, what is already working.
That can bring some of the excitement back.
The biggest wardrobe isn't necessarily the most stylish wardrobe
It's easy to assume that someone with an amazing personal style must have an amazing amount of clothes.
But I don't think that's true.
Having hundreds of pieces doesn't automatically mean you have great personal style.
Owning pieces that you love, and that you wear over and over again because they make you feel amazing?
That sounds like someone who knows their personal style to me.
You already have more than you think
This is one of the core beliefs behind my styling work:
You already have more than you think.
Buy Less. Wear More. Love What You Own.
Because finding your personal style isn't about creating a completely new version of yourself.
It's about understanding the version of you that's already there.
And sometimes, you don't need more clothes.
You just need to see the ones you already own a little differently.
